A bunion is a large, bony bump that occurs on the outer edge of your foot at the base of your big toe. A bunion occurs when the bones in the front of your foot are moved out of place, causing your big toe to push up against the others. In the long run, this pressure causes your metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP) to become swollen and lead to other issues.

The symptoms of bunions vary from person to person. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Corns and calluses
  • Limited movement of your big toe
  • Pain when you put weight on your affected foot
